Southern Piedmont Hardpan Forest – CEGL003714

The Southern Piedmont Hardpan Forest in the Turkey Run Natural Area of Cumberland State Forest (Cumberland County) is small (23 acres) but exemplary.  Despite appearances, the stand is quite old and some of the large post oaks (Quercus stellata) and hickories (Carya glabra) have been aged by the Virginia Dept. of Forestry at well over 200 years.
