Bryophytes and lichens are the first life-forms to occupy granitic flatrocks. In the background, their growth has built up a mat thick enough to support a dense stand of Appalachian sandwort (Minuartia glabra).  The Nature Conservancy Gasburg Granite Flatrocks Preserve, Brunswick County.
