The blackish-colored moss Grimmia laevigata (in foreground) is often abundant on the exposed granite, while grasses and other lithophytic vascular plants congregate in thin organic soils on the edges of the open rock.  Along Birchin Creek, Fort Pickett Military Reservation, Nottoway County.
