Non-Riverine Swamp Forest (Tupelo - Bald Cypress Type) – CEGL004429

Extensive peat-filled hollows between ancient dunes in "The Desert" area of First Landing State Park (City of Virginia Beach) support a large, near-maritime occurrence of non-riverine swamp forest.  The herb layer of this stand is co-dominated by cypress-swamp sedge (Carex joorii) and royal fern (Osmunda spectabilis).
