Central Appalachian Basic Ash - Hickory Woodland – CEGL003683

An unusual rocky woodland with an herb layer overwhelmingly dominated by river oats (Chasmanthium latifolium). This grass typically grows in alluvial forests but sometimes occurs in woodlands on base-rich outcrops that have ephemeral seepage.  Southeast slope of Sawmill Ridge, Albemarle County, Shenandoah National Park.
