A woodland of ashes (Fraxinus americana , turning reddish) and hickories (Carya spp., turning yellow) forms a matrix on shelves of exposed metabasalt (greenstone) cliffs on the western flank of Big Devils Stairs in the Northern Blue Ridge, Rappahannock County. Shenandoah National Park.
