The Appalachian Xeric Pine Outcrop Woodland occurs throughout the Virginia mountains on the most acidic and exposed cliffs, pavements, and outcrops of sandstone and quartzite.  This stand is on the massive promontory of Big Schloss, at the summit of Great North Mountain in Shenandoah County (and Hardy County, West Virginia).  Lee Ranger District, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
