Chestnut oak - Virginia pine woodland, with poverty oat grass (Danthonia spicata) dominating the herb layer, on phyllite outcrops on the north ridge of Smith Mountain, north of the Roanoke River in Bedford County.  Smith Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Area (DGIF/Appalachian Power).
