Central Appalachian Xeric Chestnut Oak - Virginia Pine Woodland – CEGL008540

Central Appalachian chestnut oak (Quercus montana) - Virginia pine (Pinus virginiana) woodland on sandstone pavement of Tinker Mountain, above Carvins Creek in Botetourt County.  Similar stands occur on several Ridge and Valley strike ridges that have dipping outcrops of slightly calcareous Silurian sandstones on their eastern flanks.
