Central Appalachian Xeric Chestnut Oak - Virginia Pine Woodland – CEGL008540

Mixed graminoids (Carex pensylvanica, Danthonia spicata, Dichanthelium depauperatum, Schizachyrium scoparium var. scoparium) under stunted hickories and pine, on a steep sandstone pavement on southeast flank of Tinker Mountain above Carvins Creek, Botetourt County.  The sandstone here is slightly calcareous, which enables a greater diversity of plants to inhabit the outcrop.
