A well-developed low shrub and herb layer in a chestnut oak - Virginia pine woodland on the west slope of Mill Mountain, a Blue Ridge foothill in southern Albemarle County.  The dominant species, occurring here on acidic gneiss outcrops, include dwarf spiraea (Spiraea corymbosa), Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica), and little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium var. scoparium).
