Dry-Mesic Calcareous Forest (Chinquapin Oak - Mixed Hardwoods Type) – CEGL004793
Dry-mesic calcareous forests occurring on dolostone of the Knox Group at Pinnacle State Natural Area Preserve in Russell County are extraordinarily species-rich, with up to 110 species recorded in a 400 square meter plot.  Chinquapin oak (Quercus muehlenbergii), Shumard oak (Quercus shumardii), sugar maple (Acer saccharum), black maple (Acer nigrum), and white ash (Fraxinus americana) are characteristic trees in an overstory with no clear dominants.
