Southern Coastal Plain Mesic Mixed Hardwood Forest ~ CEGL007211

Swamp island stands of mesic mixed hardwood forest are numerous along the western edge of the Great Dismal Swamp near the Suffolk Scarp.  Here deep, sinuous swamps are interlaced with slightly raised areas supporting beech (Fagus grandifolia), swamp chestnut oak (Quercus michauxii), and cherrybark oak (Q. pagoda).  This stand is west of Jericho Ditch in Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Area, City of Suffolk.
