The Savage Neck Dunes State Natural Area Preserve in Northampton County contains on of the best examples in the world of the loblolly pine/sand heather dune woodland.  This globally rare community type is restricted to the highest and most protected dunes in scattered locations of coastal Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware.
