At some sites, the loblolly pine/sand heather dune woodland may result from secondary succession on high dune galls or "blowouts."  During the early stages, a sand heather (Hudsonia tomentosa) dwarf shrubland may become established, followed by the gradual invasion of pines as the habitat stabilizes.  False Cape State Park and Natural Area Preserve, City of Virginia Beach.
