Northern Blue Ridge Mafic Fen – CEGL006249

The large mafic fen near Skyline Drive at Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park (Madison County) was degraded by deer herbivory and shrub invasion.  But a recent program of prescribed burning, along with a natural reduction in deer herd numbers, has greatly improved its condition.
