Northern Blue Ridge Mafic Fen – CEGL006249

All of the Northern Blue Ridge mafic fens are in the Big Meadows area of Shenandoah National Park, on both sides of Skyline Drive in Madison County.  Here, American false-hellebore (Veratrum viride) and sedges dominate an herbaceous opening among thickets of gray dogwood (Cornus racemosa), maleberry (Lyonia ligustrina var. ligustrina), and winterberry (Ilex verticillata).
