Open forest/woodland on quartzite boulderfield along the Potomac River on the north face of Short Hill Mountain, Loudoun County. Virginia-creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), scrambling over rocks in the foreground, is one of the few vascular plants capable of rooting in the deep interstitial spaces between boulders.
