Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis)-dominated forest in deep, north-facing cove below Hemlock Springs Overlook on Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park (Madison County).  Photo was taken in May 1981; compare with the following image taken from a similar vantage point in 2010.
