Piedmont / Northern Coastal Plain Basic Seepage Swamp – CEGL006406
Early spring aspect of a large seepage swamp on the bedrock terrace along the Potomac River at Great Falls Park in Fairfax County. Most seepage swamps on metamorphic rocks of the Piedmont have soils and groundwater that are intermediate in base status between the highly acidic and strongly calcareous swamps of the Coastal Plain.  Their flora thus consists mostly of wetland generalists, and lacks most calciphilic and calciphobic species.
