Central Appalachian Shale Barren (Southern Type) – CEGL006562
Weathered shale outcrops and diverse xerophytic herbaceous vegetation under Virginia pine (Pinus virginiana), on southwest slope of Gleaves Knob subtending Cripple Creek in Wythe County.  This is the southernmost occurrence of Central Appalachian shale barrens.  Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
