Exposed soil composed of fine channery is characteristic of most shale barrens. On south-facing spur of Patterson Mountain subtending Little Patterson Creek, south of Oriskany in Botetourt County.  Eastern Divide Ranger District, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
