Ridge and Valley Calcareous Fen / Seep

Virginia Tech botanist Tom Wieboldt and DCR-DNH botanist Chris Ludwig examine plants in a travertine marl fen in the Den Creek drainage near Ellett, Montgomery County in 1993.  Alder-leaved buckthorn (Rhamnus alnifolia), skunk-cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus), golden ragwort (Packera aurea), large-leaved grass-of-parnassus (Parnassia grandifolia), and various sedges (Carex spp.) are common in the vegetation.
