Northern Hardpan Basic Oak - Hickory Forest – CEGL006216

Mature white ash (Fraxinus americana) in a Northern Hardpan Basic Oak - Hickory Forest at Elklick Woodlands State Natural Area Preserve in western Fairfax County.  Because ash is a major associate in basic oak-hickory forests, these communities are vulnerable to gap disturbances from outbreaks of the exotic insect pathogen Emerald Ash Borer.
