Southern Piedmont Basic Oak - Hickory Forest – CEGL007232

Nettle-leaf sage (Salvia urticifolia, flowering in left foreground) is one of the diverse, calciphilic herbs and shrubs in a mature, basic oak-hickory forest on bluffs along the Dan River in Halifax County.  Rocky soils here are weathered from Virgilina greenstone, a mafic, metamorphic rock.
