Bald Cypress - Water Tupelo Brownwater Swamp – CEGL007431

Even-aged stand of water tupelo (Nyssa aquatica) in a large backswamp along the Nottoway River south of Courtland, Southampton County.  Forests in these seasonally flooded swamps tend to regenerate following gap disturbances such as hurricanes or logging, and in pulses during prolonged dry periods during which tree seedlings can become established and flood-resistant.  Cypress Bridge State Natural Area Preserve.
