Hiring Range: $55,000 - $65,000

Position Number: 00105

Job Duties:

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Natural Heritage (DCR-DNH), seeks two qualified individuals to join our Inventory team, a collaborative group of botanists, zoologists, karst scientists, and vegetation ecologists with the programmatic mission of cataloging the plants, animals, unique geological features, and native ecosystems of Virginia, assessing their status and condition, and prioritizing their conservation needs. This statewide inventory is the foundation of the Natural Heritage Program, providing the basis for analyses and data products used to set land and biodiversity conservation priorities in Virginia. The Field Zoologist positions are part of an integrated team of 48 full-time and approximately 15 part-time scientists and natural resource experts, including 6 zoologists.

The Field Zoologist positions are based out of Richmond, Virginia, but the positions have statewide responsibilities, including zoological field work across the state, focusing on inventories for rare, threatened, and endangered (RTE) animals tracked by DCR-DNH (see https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural-heritage/infoservices#lists). Inventories focus on locating new locations and updating known locations of the state’s most imperiled fauna, accurately mapping their extent, assessing the condition of and threats to the population, and completing field data for processing. The field season is particularly heavy from late March to early October, but certain taxa are best surveyed during other parts of the year. Frequent overnight travel and non-traditional hours will be required Monday-Friday, and sometimes, though rarely, weekend work. The non-field season portion of the year is devoted to synthesizing field data for entry into DCR-DNH’s biodiversity database and providing deliverables for projects, specimen curation and identification, report writing, and administrative processes. These positions will include opportunities to attend and present at professional meetings, as well as opportunities for outreach and collaboration with scientists in the academic community; local, state, and federal agency partners; conservation non-profits; and other partners in the Natural Heritage Network.

The Field Zoologists work under the supervision of the Lead Field Zoologist. The chief duty of the positions is to collect, analyze, and interpret zoological data toward the goal of conserving habitats for rare animal species in Virginia. The majority of this work is conducted in fulfillment of contractual obligations. Field locations and survey taxa are often highly variable, including both invertebrates and vertebrates, and are largely determined by specific grants and contracts. The Field Zoologists often work in collaboration with other staff that may include botanists, vegetation ecologists, and karst scientists. Field work includes designing and conducting zoological inventories for a wide range of animal taxa, with specific emphasis on rare species. Office work includes planning field surveys, preparing summaries of field observations using standard Natural Heritage methodology, identifying and curating zoological specimens, and writing technical reports detailing inventory results.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Professional knowledge of conservation biology and environmental planning concepts as applied to protection of rare animal species and populations, and ability to understand technical issues in conservation biology.
  • Professional knowledge of and experience with the principles and practices of zoological investigation and protection in natural resource inventory, planning, and management.
  • Knowledge of mid-Atlantic/southeastern U.S. fauna, including both vertebrates and invertebrates, and experience identifying much of Virginia's fauna on sight or sound.
  • Experience in animal taxonomy and ecology, zoological field sampling methods, and specimen curation techniques, including both vertebrates and invertebrates.
  • Professional experience with aerial imagery, map interpretation, collecting and processing spatial data from a variety of sources including the use of Global Positions System (GPS) receivers, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with a knowledge of orienteering, maps, and the use of GPS as related to navigating to field sites.
  • Professional analytical and project management skills, including time management, and working independently and collaboratively with the ability to work with public and private interests to successfully complete contracts and grants.
  • Professional experience with standard office software for word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and presentation graphics, such as Microsoft Office software and Windows-based systems.
  • Professional experience with graphic and oral communications and technical writing to communicate clearly and effectively to other scientists, land managers, decision makers, and individuals with varying levels of scientific understanding and technical skills.

Additional Considerations:

  • Professional experience with ESRI products (e.g., ArcPro, ArcGIS Online; Field Maps; Survey 1,2,3).
  • Professional knowledge of and experience with one or more of the invertebrate taxonomic groups tracked by DCR-DNH is highly preferred (See https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural-heritage/document/animallist-current.pdf).
  • Professional experience applying NatureServe/Natural Heritage methodology; experience with biodiversity inventory, data management, and conservation planning activities in the context of NatureServe/Natural Heritage Network.
  • Experience with Virginia's and/or the Mid-Atlantic's biogeography, botany, ecology, and geology.
  • Professional knowledge of database uses, structures, and applying and maintaining them effectively for projects.
  • Professional experience conducting environmental impact reviews and making conservation recommendations, including recommendations for land acquisitions, management designations, land management activities, and sustainable development.
