Did something in your yard end up on DCR’s updated invasive plant species list?
Swap in a Virginia native plant and you’ll be supporting local wildlife and biodiversity.
Experts at Virginia’s Soil and Water Conservation Districts have suggestions for replacing invasive trees, shrubs and other plants with Virginia native species.
The state’s invasive plant list now includes 13 additional species, including the following four, shown next to a native alternative.
Buttonbush instead of butterfly-bush
Strawberry bush instead of nandina
Invasive: Nandina (Nandina domestica)
Native: Strawberry bush (Euonymus americanus)
For the Coastal Plain, other options include:
Pink muhly grass instead of fountain grass
Wild ginger instead of Italian arum
Invasive: Italian arum (Arum italicum)
Native: Wild ginger (Asarum canadense)
