With more people coming out to the parks and enjoying the amenities that each one offers, Virginia State Parks saw an increase in attendance with 7,926,344 visitors in 2021. This is a 15% increase over 2019 and a 1.5 % increase over 2020.
Natural Tunnel State Park
A growing number of people are focusing on their mental health, and getting outside to one of Virginia’s State Parks can literally provide a breath of fresh air to one’s mind and body.
“Virginia’s state parks give people an opportunity to get out of the house and safely social distance while getting to see the scenic parts of the Commonwealth,” Virginia State Parks Director Melissa Baker said. “Each park offers a unique experience and provides a chance for people to connect with nature and improve their physical and mental health.”
Shenandoah River State Park
Visitation records are tracked by the number of vehicles that visit each state park. The amount of foot traffic that enters each park, the number of overnight guests staying onsite as well as any of the staff members that are working at or visiting the parks are also accounted for in the tracking research.
In addition to an increase in visitors, Virginia state parks saw an increase in annual pass sales as well as Trail Quest Program completions.
“People have found that the annual pass is a great value for those who frequently visit Virginia State Parks,” Baker said. “The funding from state park admissions goes to support the management of these special places and helps parks to provide educational programming and recreational activities.”
“We have seen a trend in visitors who drive over two hours just to visit Shenandoah River State Park to enjoy the river, hike and even celebrate holidays,” Shenandoah River State Park Manager Veronica Flick said. “More visitors are participating in the Trail Quest Program and really enjoy the rewards and sense of accomplishment after completing each hike. Getting outdoors more, especially since the pandemic began, has really been something people of all ages are able to enjoy.”
Two new parks, Clinch River and Machicomoco, opened in 2021 and immediately sparked the interest of those looking for outdoor recreation.
Machicomoco State Park
“First time visitors quickly become returning guests that enjoy a bike ride or walk around the 3.3-mile loop trail, Machicomoco Park Manager Terry Simms said. “The park feedback has been positive and we love to hear from our new and returning guests.”
Plans for 2022 include building on park programs to offer more unique opportunities for visitors.
“Our park educator has brought numerous creative ideas to the table and we look forward to being able to implement those ideas and inspire the park visitors. We are reaching out to local theatre groups in hopes of having them perform for the campers. We plan to implement a variety of programs and series of events that keep everyone entertained and wanting to revisit the park,” said Simms.
