Site-specific Reservation Pilot Underway

I Love Virginia State Parks artworkBeginning March 1, 2015, six parks will offer some sites that guests may reserve by site number. Until now, Virginia State Parks have typically guaranteed the reservation of a campsite type but not a specific site. Campers selected a site upon arrival.

Because many campgrounds now use a site-specific reservation process, through which customer's reserve a particular site, an ever-growing number of guests have asked us to adopt a site-specific reservation process. We conducted an extensive survey of current and former customers in 2013 to get their preferences. The results were mixed.

After much discussion, we decided on a hybrid approach to start with a pilot program at representative parks across the state. The hybrid system offers both kinds of reservations at the pilot parks: Some sites will be available for site-specific reservation, and the rest will reserved as usual. The pilot will allow us to determine if the hybrid method is workable and will help our staff iron out bugs before deploying it on a larger scale. A survey will be conducted to determine how customers feel about the pilot.

As the reservation window is 11 months, reservations for March 1, 2015, go on sale April 1, 2014. Sites may be reserved by calling 800-933-7275, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by reserving online.
