In partnership with the National Park Trust, Belle Isle State Park will celebrate National Kids to Parks Day 2014.  Parents, this is a great day to take the kids out to a local park to enjoy the nice weather, spend time with one another, and to have some fun. 

Learn about boating safety and play some games, and learn to be safe around water from 9 a.m. to noon at the Boat Launch parking area.  Attend a Music by the River Concert at 6 p.m. with plenty of games for the kids and their families.

Hike along several of our trails, have a picnic in our Picnic Area, take the kids to the playground, rent a canoe or bike, or just hang out by the river.  Free Park Packs are available for check out.  Families who play together experience more family harmony and greater health.

Location: Meet at the Visitor Center
Celebrate youth and the great outdoors with the staff at Caledon. We will be holding a wide range of programs for families as we participate in this national event. Programs for the day include:

8:00-Noon You too Can Kayak- for children 12-16. Learn the basics of flatwater kayaking. We will go over safety, equipment, and the different strokes. The program will conclude with a paddle trip into Caledon Marsh to view the heron rookery, a beaver dam, and a bald eagle nest. Limited to 14 paddlers.
10:00-noon Fossil Find- discover the incredible and complex geological history and find out if there are sharks & dinosaurs in the Potomac River.
2:00-3:30 I Spy Hayride- take a wagon ride through the Caledon forest to see some amazing wildlife. Check off things on the scavenger hunt list to find out how eagle eyed you are.
7:00-9:00 Owl Prowl- join the Caledon staff to find out who is hooting in the woods.

All programs are free but space is limited so reservations are recommended. For more info and to make reservations contact the park.

Introduce the kids in your life to Grayson Highlands State Park! The Saturday before Memorial Day Weekend is National Kids to Parks Day, a nation-wide day of outdoor play. We will be holding several kid-friendly activities that are great for the whole family.

At 1 p.m., join us in the Massie Gap area for a fun woodland scavenger hunt and easy clay craft. Please bring $2 in cash to help pay for supplies. In the event of inclement weather, this event will be held at the Visitor Center.

At 2:30 p.m., meet at Massie Gap for a wild pony hike! We will look for the famous ponies of Grayson Highlands, hear their story, and enjoy the great view from Wilburn Ridge. Our hike on the Rhododendron Trail will be 1 mile total.

At 8 p.m., come the Campground Amphitheater for our salamander meander. We will learn about these fascinating slimy creatures, then catch and observe some for ourselves!

Location: River Road Parking Access
Parents are invited to bring their children for a bike ride adventure on High Bridge Trail.  This program is free, but a $4 parking fee will apply per vehicle at the River Road Parking Lot.  Participants will meet at the parking area and be ready to begin the ride at 10 a.m.  Upon reaching the High Bridge, participants will see why it is a "bike ride to the sky" and will meet with a Park Historian and Naturalist to hear some of the fascinating and true stories about our High Bridge and our state park trail. Participants will conclude their adventure by riding back to the parking area for a total trip of close to three miles.  Bike helmets are advised.  Check tires before you begin.  Bring drinking water.  For more information contact the park office.

Location: Whole park!
This scavenger hunt is designed to allow the whole family, but especially the kids, to get out and discover new things at the park! The list will have about 20 items to find, most with several places to find them. We will not be asking you to collect items, but simply to take the sheet and write what and where you found the item. The list will be available at both the Contact Station (when you first enter the park) as well as the Visitor Center. There will also be a "hint" sheet available, but you probably won't need that. Additionally, if you find all the items on the sheet, it will get you on the Tye Overlook wagon that evening for free! The wagon ride does require pre-registration, so PLEASE sign up as early as possible for the wagon so we'll have your space reserved. Just bring the completed Scavenger Hunt with you to the wagon and you'll be set!

With so much technology in the world today, people often forget about the good, old outdoors. State parks provide many opportunities for people to enjoy nature. So, turn off the video games and come out to Kids to Parks Day and enjoy some family fun outdoors!

Start off your day with a fun, informational hayride that will depart from the Visitor's Center at 10 a.m. It will navigate through the park to the abandoned campground where you can observe the various animals that now live there. The hayride will bring you back to the Visitor's Center where you can learn "The Occaneechi Story" as you tour the museum full of interesting artifacts.

You can also check out a FREE park pack to use on one of the park's many trails. The pack provides many guide books that can be used to help you and your child identify birds, insects, animal tracks, and more!

Don't worry if you miss the morning hayride because a second one will take place at 1:00 p.m.

Occoneechee State Park is a great place to get your kids connected to nature. So step away from the busy schedules and stressful days and show your kids how great a state park can be!

Join us for some fun adventures as we join parks across the country to encourage children to explore the outdoors. The day will be filled with fun and educational activities.

The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will have a floating fishing school at 10:15 a.m.,  12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Registered participants will meet at the boat dock. See the separate event listing for additional information. Reservations are required. Space is limited and age restrictions apply.

Bring your own bicycle to ride the mountain bike obstacle course for a guided children's bicycle trail ride at 2:30 p.m. This event is provided by the Friends of Pocahontas State Park.

Maymont Park will be providing live presentations of birds of prey at 11 a.m. and 12:30  p.m. outside the nature center.

Presentations on survival skills will be presented at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the nature center.

Stop by the nature center to receive information and maps on self guided hikes.
Most programs and activities are free (parking fees apply) but some activities may have fees. Each of the above activities has limited participation, so please call 796-4255 to register for them (separately).

Just in time to celebrate National Kids To Park Day, Twin Lakes holds it's first Junior Ranger Day of the year!

Join us for a full day of amazing outdoor adventures. With fun activities like canoeing, hiking, geocaching, fishing, archery and more; you'll leave the park being a certified Junior Park Ranger.

Pre-registration is required and spaces are limited. $10 per child for the Junior Ranger Program. Please pack a lunch and water bottle. Parents are welcome to follow with child through the day but asked to allow kids to discover the great outdoors in their own way.

6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Welcome Campfire Program- Snack on S'mores and take a hands-on look at the park's animals, wildlife and history. Bring a roasting stick if you have one. This program is free. Meet at the Amphitheater behind the Discovery Center.

Location: Indian Creek - Meet at Visitor Center
In recognition of National Kids to Parks Day, Wilderness Road State Park will host a Bicycle Rodeo and Stargazing event. A bicycle rodeo is a clinic to teach children the skills and precautions needed for riding a bicycle safely. Following the rodeo, the park will host a Stargazing event beginning at 9 p.m. utilizing high-powered telescopes and more!

York River State Park is offering a variety of programs as part of National Kids to Parks Day. Self-guided Park Pack Backpacks are available at the park office.

Guided programs include a 10 a.m. to 12 noon Fossil Frenzy Hike and a 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Pick your Paddle canoe/kayak trip through Taskinas Creek.
