First Day Hikes, a national collaboration between Virginia State Parks and America's State Parks, are a great way to cure cabin fever, to burn off those extra holiday calories, and to start off the New Year with an invigorating winter hike in a beautiful state park.

Take a hike on Watch House and Mud Creek trails to identify winter trees and wildlife. Dogs are welcome if they are on a 6-foot leash.

Dress for the weather and wear sturdy foot wear. Warm up after the hike with a cup of hot chocolate, apple cider, or coffee and cookies.  Make 2014 an outdoor year!

Hoping to get outdoors more in 2014?  This is the perfect opportunity to initiate your New Year's resolution. Cross paths with some feathered friends, identify some interesting edibles, and acquire some skills that are naturally fun! 

1:00 p.m. Hawk Walk: Embark on an invigorating guided nature hike through prime hawk habitat.  All ages welcome.

2:00 p.m. Falconry Display: Grab a seat at the Amphitheater to watch a true display of nature skills during a hawk flying demonstration from some fascinating local falconers.

3:00 p.m. Ancient Edibles Nature Stroll:
Walk with a ranger to discover some nature skills that can help you identify plants in the winter. 

1:00-3:00 p.m. Sun and Fire Skills:
Learn the fundamentals of sun navigation and fire starting.  Warm yourself by the campfire, and enjoy hot cocoa and light refreshments.

Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear.

Our First Day Hike is being presented by the Alleghany Highlands Master Naturalists. This 0.79 mile moderate hike will follow Tobacco House Ridge Trail from the intersection of Blue Suck Falls Trail to White Oak Campground and will offer an outstanding view of Douthat Lake.

The hike will conclude with a campfire.

Bring field guides, nature journals, binoculars, and/or camera if you wish.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
No pets permitted.

Start 2014 off right: with a hike in the fresh air of the new year!  Choose your distance.
Join us for a two-mile hike to the rocks of Wilburn Ridge and turn back there, or continue on with a ranger to complete the eight-mile hike to the summit of Mount Rogers. Be sure to dress warmly, as the highlands experience particularly cold and windy weather. Those wishing to complete the full Mount Rogers hike must be in good physical condition, due to the distance and rough terrain. Pack a lunch and bring plenty of water.The views along the trail are fantastic, and we may even see the wild ponies of Grayson Highlands and Jefferson National Forest. Hope to see you there!

Location: Meet at the River Road parking lot
You are invited to visit High Bridge Trail State Park for its annual First Day Hike. The hike will follow the trail to High Bridge. Total length of the hike is about three miles.

Education Specialist, Bob Flippen, will lead the walk across High Bridge where a brief program on the artillery ordnance used at High Bridge will be presented by Bill Graham, of Powhatan. This will include a discussion regarding the four earthen forts used by the Confederates to guard the approaches to High Bridge.

Enjoy drinks and light refreshments provided by the Friends of High Bridge Trail State Park.  The First Day Hike is part of a nationwide movement to encourage the use of local, State and National Parks as part of a healthy lifestyle.  Please remember to bring drinking water as there is none available on the trail.  A parking fee applies at the River Road parking lot. Let's Go Geocaching!
Explore the wilderness of the park by learning how to geocache with a park ranger! Participants will be introduced to the concept of geocaching; they will be shown how to use a GPS unit to find geocache locations in the park. They will then go out to search for a couple of geocaches. It is recommended that participants wear comfortable walking shoes, bring water, and wear bug spray.

Overlook Hike
Join a park ranger as we hike to the lake's edge and absorb a beautiful view and diverse environment! The program will consist of a ride in the park's van to the start of the trail; a nature hike highlighting plant and animal life; and a break at the end of the trail to observe the magnificent scenery on Ware Creek. It is recommended that participants wear comfortable walking shoes, bring water, and wear bug spray.

Location: Meet at the E. Floyd Yates Parking area
Want your new year to start off with a healthy, energizing activity? Join a park staff member and go for a hike along Big Woods Trail and Pine Trail loop (both trails are designated as easy). This 2.3 mile guided hike will take participants through beautiful wetlands and pine tree stands. Great activity for family and friends. Tips for a great hike: make sure to wear layers, comfortable walking shoes (no heels or flipflops) and bring a water bottle. Binoculars and field guides are also welcome. No registration necessary. Please meet park staff at the E. Floyd Yates Parking area just past the playground on Powhatan State Park Road. There is no program fee, but parking fees apply.

Looking for a way to keep those New Year's resolutions? We'll help you start the year off right as you walk off a few of those Holiday calories. Come explore our trails!
Enjoy a ranger-led hike along our Buck Run trail. This is a great time to catch a glimpse of many of the water birds who overwinter along the shorelines of the park. You might see Great Blue Herons, ducks, immature loons, or even a Bald Eagle! This trail is listed as moderate.
This is a sun or snow event - so dress appropriately and wear proper footwear.  Bring your hiking staff, binoculars, and/or camera. Well-behaved dogs are welcome and must be leashed at all times.
This event is free however, regular parking fees apply.
