Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to identify some of Virginia's native trees? It can take some time to develop this skill, but we have a park interpreter who is willing to help you get started. We will go on a short hike on the river bank trail, and along the way will stop at some of the more well-known trees in Virginia. We'll show you some tips and tricks that you can use to identify many different types of trees, and also show you some of the different types of wood that you can get from them.

There is no fee for this program.

Parking fees are required unless you are staying in a cabin or the campground.
