New River Trail Challenge Triathlon

Virginia State Parks, Appalachian Power and Dominion Power are please to announce that the race will be held on Sept. 17, 2016.

The race begins with a 40-mile bike ride, followed by a 12-mile kayak run, and finishes with a half marathon along southwestern Virginia’s New River Trail State Park. Participants can either choose to compete solo or in teams of two or three. Everyone is welcome. The race attracts athletes of all fitness levels competing in various age groups and categories, from hardcore solo competitors to “bucket-listers” of all ages.

Food will be available for purchase on race day, and locally crafted brew will be available during and after the race for spectators and participants. Entrants will receive two well-deserved drink tickets for the beverage of their choice. Hot showers will be available to those camping out Friday and on race day.

The Race

The three-stage race begins at Foster Falls with a 40-mile bike ride followed by a 12-mile kayak stage and then a half marathon (13.1 miles).

The race is limited to 300 so register early to ensure a spot. Teams with at least two students or faculty members from the same university qualify for discount registration fees. Race sponsors take part in the Sponsor Challenge with top honors going to the team with the lowest overall time.

Directions to race headquarters: From I-77, take Exit 24 go east on Route 69 to Route 52 (Fort Chiswell Rd.), go north to Route 608 (Foster Falls Rd.), go east and follow the brown park signs into the Foster Falls Access.
