Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

The Blue Ridge Foothills and Lakes Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists would like to invite you on over to enjoy an informative talk at Smith Mountain Lake State Park, on the porch. The porch is a something new and a great place to host discussions and other fun educational events at this state park.
The following talks on the porch have already been scheduled:
- Saturday, June 6 Dick Leroy -- SOS/CoCoRaHS 10:00am - 11:00am AND 12noon-1:00pm
- Saturday, June 13 Rick Brager -- VMN/BRFAL 11:00am - 2:00pm
- Sunday, June 14 Jim & Denise Pilversack -- Eastern Box Turtles 2:00pm - 3:00pm
- Thursday, June 18 Rick Watson -- Water Quality Sampling 11:00am-11:30am AND 1:00pm-1:30pm
- Saturday, July 11 Rich Brager -- VMN/BRFAL 11:00am - 2:00pm
Ask for directions to the porch when you enter the park, it is easy to find at the Visitor Center.
