Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Have you ever wondered how parks decide on amenities? It's complicated, but one answer is that people are asked about the outdoor activities they've enjoyed and what they'd like more of. This information in turn informs what’s needed.

That's where the Virginia Outdoors Survey (VOS) comes in. It's conducted every five years and is critical to the Virginia Outdoors Plan, which is Virginia's guiding document for parks and outdoor recreation. This year, U.Va.'s Center for Survey Research - the group that handles the VOS - is trying something different, and you can help

Typically, a tightly controlled random sample group is sent a "juried" survey. The survey is 17 pages. In 2017, however, the researchers are also conducting a less formal "crowd-sourced" survey that anyone can take. Results from the formal and informal surveys will be compared.

If you'd like to take part in Virginia's outdoor recreation future, here's your chance. Follow this link to the survey. It'll be open until Aug. 24. We at DCR appreciate you taking the time to contribute your thoughts and opinions.

If you're really interested, check out the 2012 VOS as well.
