Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

She can't sit still.  She's always working in the historic gardens, straightening up the gift shop, coming up with great ideas, and willing to lend a hand at special events. Her name is Barbara Lindley and she is Virginia State Parks 2014 Volunteer of the Year.

Barbara Lindley received the 2014 Virginia State Parks Volunteer of the Year award in April.

Park Manager Nathan Younger presented Barbara Lindley with the 2014 Virginia State Parks Volunteer of the Year award on April 4, 2015.

Virginia State Parks relies heavily on our volunteer corps through a variety of programs. We have individual volunteers like Barbara Lindley, we have volunteers who work through the AmeriCorps program, we have volunteers who work on projects as a group through the companies or groups they are associated with, we have camphosts, and we also have internships in a variety of positions. All of these volunteers help Virginia State Parks run more efficiently and cost-effectively. Barbara, though, is one of a kind.

Barbara Lindley manages the Friends of Chippokes gift shop at the park.

Barbara Lindley manages the Friends of Chippokes gift shop in the park. Great gift ideas and great prices! All proceeds benefit the park.

A 17-year veteran of Virginia State Parks volunteering, Barbara was instrumental in advocating for equestrian trails at Chippokes and still continues to advocate for Chippokes, and all Virginia State Parks, through her involvement in the Virginia Association for Parks. She works in the historic gardens every day, manages the Friends of Chippokes gift shop, and will be helping out at the Pork, Peanut, and Pine Festival this year.

Barbara Lindley enjoys working in the historic gardens behind the Jones-Stewart mansion.  Mansion and garden tours are scheduled all year long.

The Pork, Peanut, and Pine Festival is July 18-19, 2015 and will feature live music, crafters, children's programs and much, much more. Be sure to check out our blog site later this week for a full festival schedule.  If you see Barbara at the festival, please give her a hearty "thank you" from me and all the rest of Virginia State Parks staff.

And if you are inspired, please register as a volunteer with Virginia State Parks by clicking here and start your journey down the volunteer trail. Barbara Lindley has blazed a path for all of us, inspiring, teaching, and helping others give back to the Virginia State Parks community.

Glen Musick (June 25, 2015 07:20:59 PM): Barbara, I'm so proud of you and this aware is so fitting based on your efforts to improve our Virginia State Parks. Without volunteers such as yourself and the with the continual cut back in funding our State Parks would truly in a sad state.
If only you could had been around in the years of CCC.

Thank you for all you do in our community.
