Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Enthusiasts of Virginia State Parks' newest parks, and coincidentally our park of the month, Powhatan State Park, may know that improvements need to be made to the intersection of Maidens Road (Rt. 522) and Old River Trail (Rt. 617) before the park can allow RVs and horse trailers.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has been working on resolving the problem. The intersection is very tight and just cannot accommodate large vehicles at this time. The proposed improvements include adding turn lanes, widening the existing lanes, and improving shoulders and drainage. A public hearing has been scheduled to discuss the plans.

Public Hearing on Maidens Rd. and Old River Trail Intersection
Thursday, June 24, 2015, 5-7 p.m.
Powhatan County Library, 2270 Mann Rd, Powhatan, VA 23139

The new full service campground in under construction and great trails are just waiting for equestrian users. If you are interested in seeing the park open for recreational vehicles and horse trailers, we encourage you to participate in the meeting or send comments.

Can't make the meeting? You can review the plans in person at the VDOT Richmond District Office (call first to make sure staff will be available to answer questions). You can also submit comments in writing or email by July 6. See the VDOT hearing announcement for details on these options.

In the meantime, please visit the park to enjoy its many trails, access to the James River and picnicking. They have some fantastic programs as well. You can search for scheduled programs here.

J. Frawley (June 20, 2015 11:17:13 PM): The state built the park promising RV camping within a year of opening. VDOT is good at excuses and delays. Time for them to get it together and fix the road. But we campers will still be waiting 5 years from now.
