Take a walk on the wild side when you visit our Park of the Month for July: False Cape State Park, Virginia

Getting to False Cape State Park at the far south end of the Sandbridge area of Virginia Beach requires some planning and foresight, but it is definitely worth it to visit this unique Virginia State Park

Once you decide whether you are going to hike, bike, boat or take the tram (click here for a full schedule of tram tours) you might see

  • nine miles of pristine undeveloped Atlantic Ocean shoreline
  • swales of dunes stretching off in the interior
  • live oak trees by the hundreds their branches twisting and turning in the sand
  • the great expanse of Back Bay with egrets, herons, and eagles gliding along
  • fleeting glimpses of deer, wild pigs, and coyotes;
  • turtles, frogs, otters, and nutria sunning themselves or frolicking in the water
  • evidence attesting to the survival of the hardy souls from the Wash Woods community
  • the Wash Woods church steeple and graveyard
  • pelicans, shorebirds, gulls, sandpipers, and peregrine falcons
  • dolphins and whales swimming off shore

Location

Nestled between Back Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, False Cape State Park is one of the last remaining undeveloped areas along the Atlantic coast. As the former home of Native Americans, the historic Wash Woods community and a Coast Guard lifesaving station, False Cape honors the hardy souls who made a living from the sea.

A few years ago I created this video for Virginia State Parks 75th anniversary and I think it does a good job explaining how to visit False Cape State Park. Stay tuned for the next segment in our Park of the Month Series for July and our continued walk on the wild side, at False Cape State Park.
