Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Just 35 minutes from Richmond is Powhatan State Park and they are hosting their Annual Fall Festival on Saturday, October 10, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Just 20 minutes from Richmond is Pocahontas State Park who are planning, with help from their Friends group, their annual Park After Dark event on Saturday, October 24, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Just 60 minutes from Richmond is Twin Lakes State Park who is hosting their annual Haunting on the Lake event that includes the famous Haunted Trail.

The whole weekend of October 23 and October 24, 2015 is filled with many activities including a Pumpkin Patch, Ghost stories around a campfire on the beach and trick or treating.
