Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Virginia State Parks were opened in 1936, but the history of many of our parks started long before.

For our 2019 Geocache series we invite you to meet just a few of the people who have shaped the history of our parks, our state, and our nation, including the American Revolution.

Bring your friends and family out to a park of your choice to hunt for the new caches and have some fun outdoors.

People of the Parks is our 2019 Geocaching Adventure

The landscapes of our parks are shaped by wind, water, time, and tide. The stories are crafted by the people who helped, or are helping to make our parks what they are today.

Participate in the new 2019 geocaching program at Virginia State Parks

This year’s geocache adventure invites you to explore parks by meeting these people through the collector’s cards. You’ll find a different one in each cache.

How does it work?

Geocaching is family fun at Virginia State Parks  New caches for 2019 start on April 1 at Virginia State Parks

Log cache visits on geocaching.com as you would any other find. If you don’t have one, create an account at the Virginia State Parks Adventures page and log finds to get prizes for completing 5, 10, 20 and all parks. You may log Trail Quest entries at the same time. A new game starts each year in April. Here's a list of official geocaches (the new ones will show on April 1).

If you're new to geocaching, visit this site to learn all about it. And if you don't have a GPS unit, no problem. All parks rent them for a nominal fee. (Park offices and visitor centers are open on a limited basis so call ahead if you plan to rent a unit.)

While you're geocaching, why not take part in Trail Quest, too? Log park visits and earn special prizes.
