Have you ever wondered how beekeepers get honey out of a hive?

Now is your chance to buzz on over to find out how they get that honey out of the hive at Sky Meadows State Park for National Honey Bee Day.

Beehives at Sky Meadows State Park, Virginia

For this special day, members of the Beekeepers of the Northern Shenandoah (BONS) will be extracting honey from our hives. Beekeepers will demonstrate how to care for a beehive, display beekeeping tools, and answer all your honey bee related questions. You can even purchase local honey and other bee products to enjoy at home.

Doug and Ramona Morris are our volunteer beekeepers at the park

At Sky Meadows State Park, we are lucky to have our own bee hives and dedicated volunteers who care for them. The hives are cared for in partnership with volunteers, Doug and Ramona Morris, of Beekeepers of Northern Shenandoah. Our park’s farm benefits from our hives in two ways; we get well-pollinated healthy pumpkins (which you can pick in October), and sweet jars of honey in our gift shop. We are also happy for the opportunity to help educate people about the importance of honey bees. Come see our hives on National Honey Bee Day.

Virginia State Parks (August 08, 2015 09:07:41 PM): States have different methods of paying for their state park operations. We are not the only system that charges out of state visitors more. It all comes down to not having enough money to operate. This year government leaders felt that Virginians deserved a discount over out of state users because their tax dollars pay for half of the operating support and all the money for developing facilities. Even with free increases we struggle to maintain services at a level our customers expect. We are keeping a record of fee complaints to review.

Steve boothe (August 08, 2015 06:52:49 PM): My name is Steve Boothe for the past 30 plus years
my family and I have visited Va parks, Mainly Douthat, we have loved it , my kid spent all vacations as well as my grandkids and this year our great grandson came we rent 2 sights one for 8 days and 1 for 10 days. I just received your new price list and see where you have raise your prices for out of state guest by 17.5 percent . We spend over $800 in fees this year gas and $500 to $1000 in food and supplies. With your increase in fees I no longer feel welcome and plan to travel elsewhere!!! I was going to send your new price list to our parks and recreation department but decided not to because we welcome visit from other states!!!
