Sometimes it is hard to decide which adventure to embark on at York River State Park. Our Fossil Frenzy Hike is the most popular ranger guided program that crosses a marsh and wooded uplands to the shoreline.

But, the Pick Your Paddle trip seems like it would be a great way to learn about the estuarine environment. Wouldn't it be cool if you could do both? This year, we are offering a program where you can.

You can do it all on May 30, 2016

Hit the trails

Guests who participate in the Moody's Wharf Meet-Up will be divided into two groups. One will be led along the Beaver and Mattaponi Trails. These are hiking only paths that cross a non-tidal freshwater stream and a tidal stream that cuts through a small marsh. The woods are a mixture of hardwoods with pine. The final leg of the hike is on a steep switchback that leads to Fossil Beach. During the colonial period, a shipping wharf was located here.

The second group will canoe and/or kayak into Taskinas Creek and explore its expansive estuarine marsh. From there, they will venture to the confluence of the creek and York River where Osprey have found the perfect place to fish and nest. They may stop at the seining beach before heading further down river to the Fossil Beach where they will meet up with the first group. There, the two groups will trade off adventures so that the hikers paddle back and the paddlers hit the trails.
