Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Are you looking to make a difference during your college break, but still want to enjoy your vacation time? American Hiking Society and Virginia State Parks have teamed up to provide you opportunities to connect with nature, meet other students with like-minded interests, and have a once-in-a-lifetime outdoor vacation all while working on a week-long trail building project.
The 2016 Alternative Break schedule offers trips in many Virginia State Parks including, Belle Isle, Douthat, James River, Pocahontas, Staunton River, and York River. Indoor lodging, trip planning guidance, meal planning guidance, project supervision, and use of tools, exclusive t-shirt, and membership with American Hiking Society are all included in your registration fee. All trips provide free time to explore the surrounding landscape, hike, or enjoy the cultural offerings of nearby attractions.
Never been hiking or done trail work before? We welcome you! Trips don’t require any prior trail work experience, just a good attitude and a willingness to get a little dirty! American Hiking Society’s Alternative Break program offers you one of the most affordable, fulfilling ways to explore and improve our Virginia’s parks, while creating memories that will last a lifetime.
