Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Time for another Virginia State Park Adventure!

When we decided to go about with our 2016 park challenge, we chose to forego getting each other Christmas presents, and instead have a weekend away in January. 

We could not have lucked out with better weather and the next few posts will be all about the weekend. There is a nice cluster of 4 parks in the Southern Piedmont and we decided to start Saturday 1/16 at Twin Lakes State Park.

January 16 Twin Lakes State Park

A gorgeous, sunny, January day with temps in the 50's. It was easy to find the information center and the helpful ranger directed us on a great hiking path through the park. 

We ate lunch at the picnic tables along Goodwin Lake, cut along Goodwin Lake Road to the Between the Lakes Trail and hopped on Otter's Path Trail with a quick pass on Beaver Point Trail. WOW. We were really impressed with the quality of the trail, giving a "deep-in-the-woods" feel with lots of old growth, exciting changes in elevation, and the occasional stream running right across the path.

Prince Edward Lake was an unfortunate shade of brown, presumably from sedimentation caused by runoff and erosion of the forest. While a clear lake would have been a bit nicer, it did little to detract from the surrounding natural beauty, even in winter. 

On the way back to the car we stole a trip around Goodwin Lake on the Goodwin Lake Trail hiking almost 6-miles in total. This is definitely a spot we may end up coming back to in the near future.
