Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

While designed with children in mind, adults would enjoy these five random things too. And of course you could do them at any state park or even in your own backyard. The best part is that you don't need anything except your own imagination. Here are five random things to do at Holliday Lake State Park:

Hiking at Holliday Lake State Park, Virginia

1. Close your eyes and sit or stand as quietly as you can. Listen to the sounds you hear. Can you hear any birds or insects? Do you hear or feel the wind? Try making the sounds you hear.

2. Look around at the trees. Find the tallest tree you see and examine it. How old do you think that tree is? If the tree could talk, what kinds of stories would it tell? Make up a "history" for that tree.

3. Find a big rock (but not too big). Gently turn it over and look underneath it. Is anything moving under there? Is anything growing under there? Is it dry or damp? After you've looked a good while, turn it back over exactly like you found it.

4. Can you find any tracks on the ground around you? The best places to look are along the lake's shore and on the edge of a creek. Can you figure out what kind of animal left those tracks? Was it big or small? Do you see any other evidence that animals have been there (feathers, droppings, trash)?

5. Imagine if you went to sleep tonight as a human and woke up in the morning as an animal. What kind of animal would you choose to be? Why? What would you eat? Where would you live? Who would be your friends?
