Exploring Bear Creek Lake during the Off-Season
This is the time of the year we at Virginia State Parks call our “off-season.” Things start to slow down for staff, pools and beaches are closed and weekday campers are fewer as the weather gets cooler.
But this is the best time to be at our parks when you have the whole park to yourself to explore and there are still plenty of activities you can do while enjoying the solitude and quietness of the park.

Kayaking/Canoeing
During the off-season kayaks or canoes rentals are not available for rent but this doesn’t mean you can’t bring your own and launch off a boat ramp at the lake. This 40-acrea lake is a perfect place for scenic views and wildlife viewing.

Those with a canoe or small boat can enjoy fishing there. Two canoe launches with access to the river are in Cumberland State Forest. A boat ramp at Bear Creek Lake is available for non-gasoline powered boats. The park also has a universally accessible fishing pier.
