Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Special Children's Outdoor Exploration & Activity Tent at Kiptopeke State Park

The Eastern Shore Birding Festival kicks off on October 11, 2013 at the Cape Charles Firehouse.  A full schedule of events, guided tours, and educational programs, including several special tours and programs at Kiptopeke State Park is on the schedule for the long weekend.  Click here for the official event website with links to the schedule.

Smokey Bear will be at Kiptopeke State Park teaching kids about fire safety.

While Kiptopeke State Park is the site of several special birding-focused guided tours, the main attraction will be the Outdoor Exploration and Activity Tent open on Saturday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., that is part of the Eastern Shore Birding Festival Environmental Education passport program.  Children need to get the Environmental Education passports stamped by visiting exhibitors at Kiptopeke State Park and at the Cape Charles Firehouse.  Each exhibitor has a fun activity or craft for children.  Children who turn in completed passports will earn a prize from the Eastern Shore Environmental Education Council.

There will be a shuttle bus running on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. running round trips from Kiptopeke State Park to the Cape Charles Firehouse.  Special guest, Smokey Bear, will be on site at Kiptopeke State Park  on Saturday to talk to children about fire safety.  Visitors are encouraged to park at Kiptopeke State Park or in downtown Cape Charles.  

The Kiptopeke State Park Children's Outdoor Exploration and Activity tent and activities at the Cape Charles Firehouse are free.  There is no parking fee at Kiptopeke State Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2013. However, a day or weekend pass is needed to join any of the guided tours or special activities.  Click here for information.

Located on the Chesapeake Bay just three miles north the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, the park has a campground, six bedroom lodges, a yurt, rental RV's, and a bunkhouse.  Some overnight spaces are still available for the festival weekend.  To make a reservation, please call 1-800-933-PARK or book online.

The Kiptopeke State Park also has a fishing pier, swimming beach area, playground, and a few miles of hiking trails.  Pack a picnic lunch or plan on visiting one of the great restaurants in Cape Charles.
