Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

A Day in the Life of York River State Park: Self Guided Hikes for All
Ranger guided programs are the best way for guests to get acquainted with a Virginia State Park and York River State Park is no exception.
Roaming with a Ranger
Even in the dead of winter, we strive to offer hikes that highlight our historic and natural resources. Scouting and outdoor adventure groups have already reserved programs with us in January and February with our interpretive staff in addition to our scheduled events. More offerings are on tap as the spring and summer arrives and some activities continue into the fall.

Seeking Self Guided Adventure
However, there are some guests who aren’t seeking a ranger guided program. We have visitors who are taking a quick walk and want to get great views in little time Others are avid adventurers who need only be shown a great hiking trail. And there are those times when our interpretive staff is already booked with programs, especially during “field trip season” (March thru June). We do offer two great self guided adventures; one for those who want something quick and easy and another to challenge those with time to explore and enjoy.
Great view from the gazebo
Bluebird Loop
Some of the most dramatic views of the park are found along our Visitor Center on the Bluebird Loop Trail. The Taskinas Creek Overlook has a broad vista of the pristine estuarine marsh. The gazebo at the Maritime Overlook stands on the bluff above the confluence of the creek with the York River. The loop is paved and accessible for all guests. To extend the experience, take in the views from nearby Shelters #1 & #3. In case of bad weather, take advantage of the exhibits and live creature displays in the Visitor Center.
Navigating stairs on the trail
Taskinas Creek
Few trails anywhere offer a combination of challenging elevation changes and broad marsh views. The Taskinas Creek Trail is unique as it blends both worlds. Guests from Colorado and West Virginia have commented in our trail journal that they weren’t expecting such steep ravines east of I-95. The observation decks are great places to view and photograph wildlife from eagles and osprey to muskrat and fiddler crabs. During the paddling season, hikers can cross paths with canoeist and kayakers on the creek.
Explore Your Way
We look forward to having you with us on our ranger guided events and welcome your group, or organization to schedule a program with us. But, if you want a self-guided adventure, the Bluebird Loop and Taskinas Creek Trails are great ways for guests to enjoy York River State Park.
