What about the toddlers?

Adults and big kids seem to have all of the fun. We get to paddle by ourselves, climb mountains, and all kinds of neat stuff that are a bit too mature for toddlers. Elementary school kids are enrolled in day camps. But, the smallest of our park guest tend to get left out.

A trail fit for tots

I doubt if anyone thought of little kids when Beaver Trail was created at York River State Park. But, our 0.45 mile hiking only pathway is a great place for children to have their first adventure in the woods. There are stands of rough-barked pines and smooth beech and holly trees. A small stream cuts across the trail. Plus, there is a 'gianormous' hill for budding outdoorsman to climb. One end of the trail meets with Backbone and leads to the day use area with playgrounds. The other end meets with the Woodstock Pond trail and picnic shelter #3.

The Tyke Hike is a great way to introduce young children to hiking and the outdoors.Our ranger will have samples from animals and plants that are native to our region. This hike will be offered other times of the year so that the kids can further appreciate the changes of the season on the trail.  The hike begins at our amphitheater on Saturday, March 21st at 10:00 A.M.

Directions to York River State Park:  From I-64, take the Croaker Exit 231B. Go north on Route 607 (Croaker Rd.) for one mile, then right on Route 606 (Riverview Rd.) about one and a half miles to the park entrance. Take a left turn into the park.
